The Importance of an Initial Consultation

In order for attorneys to provide the best possible service to you it is important to be honest and open about all aspects of your case.  Initial consultations serve many purposes.  One, consultations are a tool used to determine if the client is eligible to apply for the benefit they seek.  Second, they serve to provide the client with other options that may be available to them and why one course of action is preferable to another.  Lastly, consultations provide clients with the opportunity to meet with their potential attorney.  It is very important for clients and attorneys to have a working relationship.

Some items you may want to bring with your to your initial consultation:

  • ID
  • Passport and I-94 card
  • Birth Certificate
  • Marriage Certificate
  • Divorce Decrees
  • Arrest records, criminal convictions and/or court dispositions
  • Previous paperwork filed with USCIS
  • Letters received from USCIS

Create a Paper Trail

If you chose not to overnight your paperwork to USCIS via FedEx or USPS, make sure to at least mail your documents with a Return Receipt Request.  This will help safeguard against any “misplacement” of your documents and serve as valuable proof that USCIS received your documents.   It is also important to make a copy of every form and document you send to USCIS.  Keep your Return Receipt with your other immigration paperwork in one location such as a file folder or binder.   Navigating your way through immigration can be confusing and difficult, it is important to stay organized.
